Housing Hope: GCAA’s $250,000 Relief Fund for Residents Impacted by Hurricane Helene

The devastation caused by Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina this past September was felt by countless residents, businesses, and housing providers alike. This unexpected and catastrophic storm disrupted lives, forcing difficult decisions on communities already facing immense challenges.

Through it all, the rental housing industry stepped up in remarkable ways, demonstrating resilience, compassion, and unwavering commitment to their residents. Apartment communities and other association members mobilized quickly, raising funds through grants, donations, and relief programs to support those affected.

One such effort came from Pegasus Residential, which provided aid to impacted communities in Asheville, NC, and Augusta, GA. Their fundraising efforts helped supply essential resources, emergency housing, and rebuilding support, while also offering direct assistance to employees personally affected by the storm. Pegasus Residential further amplified their impact by matching contributions up to $10,000.

Despite hands-on relief efforts—such as loading supplies onto trucks and providing direct aid—members of the Greater Charlotte Apartment Association (GCAA) felt compelled to do more. Recognizing the urgent need for long-term housing assistance, the GCAA Board established a $250,000 Hurricane Helene Rental Assistance Fund in October 2024.

How the Fund Helps

This fund enables rental housing providers to request financial assistance on behalf of displaced individuals and families from Western NC. Payments will be made directly to housing providers, ensuring that residents affected by Hurricane Helene have a path toward stable housing.

Only rental housing providers may submit requests for assistance, reinforcing the fund’s commitment to efficiently supporting those in need.

The GCAA remains dedicated to standing by our communities during times of crisis, and we are proud to be part of an industry that takes action when it matters most.
