A new apartment community in South End hopes its residents will try a new living concept. Foster Flats embraces what they refer to as coliving. These units have a private bedroom, shared kitchen, washer/dryer, and living space. A resident can call downtown Charlotte home for as low as $1,015 monthly.

This modern floorplan relies on residents embracing roommates. As someone who lived with the same roommate for seven years, I can attest that saving money was worth it. I enjoyed the camaraderie and memories my roommate and I shared while saving money. Living with a roommate allowed me to save for my long-term goals and invest in my future. Will Charlotte residents feel the same and embrace the coliving trend?

Charlotte developers took a risk in creating a new lifestyle. Their risk relies on residents wanting to save money and meet their neighbors. Foster Flats isn’t Charlotte’s only risk-taking apartment community that created a way to save residents money. The Joinery in Optimist Park, the first carless community in the city, offers a studio for $1,199 per month. Creativity is vital for rethinking housing affordability. Developers are discovering what residents can live without and building accordingly.

Foster Flats is setting the stage for modern living. Roommates aren’t a foreign concept; residents looking to save money should embrace them. While this lifestyle choice isn’t for everyone, those looking for an affordable housing option might have found it.
